Spooky Singles - Processed Cheese Slices Review
When I saw Spooky Singles for sale in my local supermarket I was compelled to purchase them, on the understanding that the contents of the package was something of ghostly or otherwise supernatural origin. So on a thunderous, rain-swept night I drew the pentagrams, lit the black candles, and recited ancient dead languages before opening the scary packet on the stroke of midnight. I must say I was kind of disappointed that there was actually no difference between 'Spooky Slices' and normal cheese slices. If your after a fright night feast then stick with the boiled razorblades and avoid this let down! If you are actually after cheese slices, then by all mean add more Rotting Zombie heads onto that score.

Freak Week at the Hop Farm - Horror Event 25th - 31st October 2012
Last year the Freak Week won an award for best seasonal scare event, I am sure this year will be just as successful. So the main attraction is five different human mazes, which all sound great.
'The Slaughter House' is a maze set in funnily enough a slaughter house which had been closed down after human remains were discovered in the pork pies there.
'Quarantine' is the most interesting sounding as it is a zombie themed human maze, this one is set in a quarantine medical centre post zombie outbreak. Being chased by zombies is something I dream of!
'The Fun House' takes place in a toy factory themed children's attraction that an aggressive gang from a recent carnival are squatting in (expect creepy clowns!).
'The Underground' takes place in a recently discovered lost underground subway station where there have been lots of reports of missing people, I am imagining this would kinda be like The Tunnel (Australian found footage film set in an underground station where there had been lots of reports of missing people).
Lastly is 'The Hatch' that purports to be the world's first human maze in which you have to crawl through, this one is set in an underground sewage system.
As well as these five mazes there is also going to be a good old classic freak show. This does sound like the kind of event were visitors may go 'missing'! Tickets for the event can be purchased from the awesome website and start at around £20. Get your tickets quick though as the first day is already sold out! Once again; I love Halloween. Needless to say this is not recommended for people with weak hearts, who suffer from claustrophobia, are epileptic, or under the age of 10.

Zombie Invasion - A Zombie Heat Map for Britain
With Halloween fast approaching (my favourite holiday of course!) things have become more busy at The Rotting Zombie HQ. I recently had the website zombieinvasion.co.uk brought to my attention, it is a heat map of Great Britain showing how the outbreak of zombies is progressing. At first panicked and flustered I lurched out into the street, broken foot dragging behind me, ready to join the hordes which the map indicated were in my area.
A few hours later tired, downbeat, my left arm long since bitten off my a rabid dog, I headed home where I re-read the email I had received and discovered the heat map was actually based on sales of zombie accessories and costumes from a fancy dress website 'allfancydress.com' over a 3 year period and not on data relating to an actual outbreak.
The website is quite bare bones, just the heat map and a few newbie tips for dealing with zombies but is clever in how it was created. If a zombie outbreak ever does occur I will expect the heat map will be adapted to show the actual spread of the zom-pocalypse. Sites like these are part of the reason I love Halloween! And if this map was real then Wales seems a good place to head to evade the undead.

Dungeon Fighter Live: Fall of Hendon Myre (2010) - Fantasy Video Game Review
Dungeon Fighter Live's plot revolves around a strange sickness that is infecting the humans in the fantasy land the game takes place in. You play as either a gunman, a female brawler, or a serious sword fighter who set out to find the root of the disease and end up stopping a plot to open a gateway to a Hell dimension (or something). To do this you fight through a series of locations killing lots and lots of monsters.
For a game with 'dungeon' in the title there is a surprising lack of dungeons, in fact there are exactly zero dungeons here! The closest I got was a temple, but the temple looked suspiciously like a cavern. For the most part you fight through woodlands, so many woods and forests!. Many levels are only slightly different in look, most have the same couple of tunes playing, many have the same enemies. This is one addictive game but it cannot be called varied.
It looks fantastic, has a lovely anime style look to it. Every now and again comic book cut scenes made up of panels appear, these all look beautiful. There is a main village you can travel to after each level where townsfolk will sell you weapons, upgrade your special powers and items and sell you herbs. Some also give you quests (either collecting a set number of items from a level, or killing the levels boss). I could not stop playing this, but realised pretty early on that it was not going to be particularly interesting. New enemies are just re-skinned older ones, most the weapons and armour you pick up are useless, and as mentioned the locations are bland. Each 'dungeon' is designed in a grid of interconnecting areas. To progress you must kill all the monsters in an area then choose an exit. I could imagine it would be fun with friends, but for me I just just put on podcasts and auto piloted. It doesn't help that you have to play though each level 3 times before you are able to go on to the next one.
The collision detection is a bit suspect, if an enemy attacks you whilst you are doing a special move they will always stop your flow even if you have your sword inches from a monsters head it will just be cancelled. If you get knocked over you can be potentially killed before you are able to stand back up. If you get dazed you are supposed to be able to hammer your buttons to recover quicker but this never seemed to work, I was only able to recover if an enemy hit me. You start the game with 10 continues but I was disgusted to find that to get more you have to pay real money, as if I am going to do that!
Dungeon Fighter Live took up around ten hours of my life, it is really addictive, but just bland, and unexciting...plus there are no dungeons in it! (though plenty of zombies...)

Final Fantasy XIII (2009) - Fantasy Video Game Review (Playstation 3)
Oh dear is the first words that come into my head space when thinking about this game. The Final Fantasy series has had some amazing, fantastic games up until Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy XI was the first MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) in the series and so had no interest for me, while Final Fantasy XII was a good game but just didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game with it's weird feel of being an offline MMORPG. A lot had been said of the very linear structure to Final Fantasy XIII and my gosh they were not joking.
The game involves two different worlds, something to do with the main characters (an annoying bunch) being marked with a cursed tattoo and being hunted by their own people. I must say that I did not finish this game, in the year and a half I was borrowing it I got forty hours into it before I had to give it back. I was not sorry to see it go, it was a millstone around my neck. Due to the long gaps in between playing it I can't really recall the story much.
Alarm bells started ringing when Leona Lewis was picked to do the theme tune for the game, the soundtrack overall is very soppy and not at all memorable which is a damn shame as the Final Fantasy series has produced some of the very best video game music in my humble opinion. The characters are to a tee all unlikeable. You have an annoying, miserable, whiny blond haired kid who I just wanted to punch, an afro'd older guy, some Australian perky one, and others equally annoying. The female lead Lightning at least has good character design, but she too is really unlikeable. Not a good thing to have all the characters you control people you can't care at all about.
This has to be the most linear RPG I have ever played, there has been plenty in the past, but least they gave the illusion of freedom, not so here. The first fifteen hours of the game were spent running down literally straight roads with no room for deviation, an utter snooze fest that moderately frequent location changes couldn't ease. Gone are the villages, instead you get to shop via a computer screen; fun city. After the first fifteen hours the game world opens up, but just into a series of really, really long winding paths.
Battles can be avoided but you won't get stronger that way. The battles themselves are not too fun to do, often feeling not in control of your character and the two A.I controlled ones you bring into battles. The enemy design is boring, a mixture of animals and robots for the main part that elicit no excitement, boss battles are no fun, and the way you have to fight summons before being able to use them is terrible.
It's not all bad news though, the game looks stunning, really good graphics, and the level up system that sees you putting points into orbs on a board is addictive. Now I don't have Final Fantasy XIII anymore I highly doubt I will ever buy it myself to finish it. It is such a boring time sink that it is really, really hard to recommend it.

Indie Horror Videogame Review Round-up 3 (X-Box Indie)
Another round up of indie demo's, oh the mirth...
Mummies VS Gun.s:
This terrible FPS is just a re skin of the equally terrible Werewolf Hallow. You are in a dark temple where motionless mummies slide towards you. Your weapon appears to have little to no effect. Terrible.
SCORE:
Night of Doom 2:
The bad thing is I think I actually own Night of Doom. The only worth while thing this Saturday evening is playing a load of truly awful demo's so this is my night of doom. This plays similar to Mummies VS Gun's but is set in a far more interesting level that has a variety of different structures. The game is a zombie survival, the zombies look quite freaky; oddly proportioned, with bizarre giant smiles on their heads, and googly eyes. A great tune plays throughout but again just not very exciting.
SCORE:
ZombieGeddon:
An overhead zombie shooter with a truly terribly animated story. Each level sees you advancing through a stage to get to the end where you must call in an air strike. You character is floaty and moves like a shopping trolley while the weapons are not very effective. It is also quite easy to get stuck on scenery. There is a large variety of zombies from skeleton and weak ones up to fire breathing zombies and lizard ones who all attack you by walking into you. A lot of quality was aimed for but the zero budget means this is another waste of space. I used to be so positive about these Indie games but I am very jaded nowadays.
SCORE:
The Hearts of Men:
I was immediately struck by the beautiful cartoon style artwork that the games is covered in, looks very professional. The Hearts of Men plays like an updated Gauntlet, the main enemies in the level I played even looked just like the ghosts from Gauntlet. This is a good looking indie game, I had fun with it even if the short looping tune started to irritate by the end. Up to 3 players, and even has rumble on it. Not bad at all.
SCORE:
Undead Empire:
Impressed! Undead Empire has a retro style look to it, like it was made on an early PC. You play as 1 of 8 characters who have headed to a mysterious mansion after their bus crashed. The mansions owner is of course a mad scientist who wants to use the survivors as fodder for his zombie army he has created. It plays out as an overhead arena based shooter with the usual upgrading and buying new weapons between rounds but the frequent story and unique look bring something new to the genre. One I think I might actually buy!
SCORE:
So there you go, another mixed bunch of cheap and cheerful indie X-Box 360 games. A thankless task from me as no one cares about these games, nor do I but I must suffer for my blog sometimes.

Dreadtime Stories: A Fungus Among Us and The Late Shift - Horror Audiobook reviews
I don't think I have ever listened to audio books before but upon hearing about a series of short horror tales I was keen to give them a listen. The audio books presented by Fangoria comprise five different tales of terror in an almost Twilight Zone styling. Before I begin I must mention that the stories are narrated by Malcolm McDowell who is one of my favourite actors, he has such a great voice, perfect for narrating horror! The first one I heard was...
A Fungus Among Us
An outbreak of insanity breaks out across a city; random people start committing acts of violence; robbing banks, burning down buildings and murdering others. The perpetrators later die when a strange giant snake like root cracks out from the top of their heads! Two detectives set out to find out what kind of drug is causing this epidemic and try to find a way to stop it before it is too late.
Immediately I was impressed by the high quality of this recording, sound effects are used to really create a sense of location, whether it be crickets chirping in the swamp, peoples footsteps, the sound of a fungus cracking out of someone's brain...Cordyceps is a real life fungus that has the ability to turn ants into mindless slaves, controlling their actions to best infect the rest of the colony. A Fungus Among Us gets that scenario and applies it to humans, what if the Cordyceps fungus was able to infect and then control humans? By far the best thing about this tale is the regular interruptions from McDowell as he gleefully comments on the tale, he interrupts a lot of times during the forty odd minutes and each time it is very welcome with his corny but funny puns.
The story comes across like something from The Twilight Zone and is enjoyable and suspenseful despite the simplicity of it. The voice actors are good and are different enough that there is no confusion over who is who. I recently heard about Cordyceps and what it can do so this tale came along at the right time. I myself have thought about what would happen if it was able to affect humans the same way it does ants.
With fantastic sound effects, a fast paced story, great actors and of course Malcolm McDowell this is one great story.

The Late Shift
I excitedly jumped into this tale after the goodness of the last one I heard. This time around McDowell doesn't have as much to say, and when he does he really is more of a narrator than a commentator.
Two friends on the way back from a late night horror film viewing pop into a 24 hour convenience store where they come across the late shift worker who seems almost retarded. Recognising the till clerk one of the friends decides to come back later to see why he was being so rude to them. This innocent event leads to the uncovering of a ridiculous, yet somehow sinister plan to use the recently deceased as late night workers for cheap labour.
I didn't enjoy this tale as much, it took me a while to understand why, the reason I came to realise was because I was well aware of the fact there was not going to be a good outcome for the man who uncovers the plot. Everywhere he runs it he is easily found, the conspiracy runs to almost humorous levels with seemingly anyone who runs a business open to the secret. I shared his paranoia and panic as he realises his days are numbered.
The story is a nice analogy for the modern worker, and the dark humour contained in it was appreciated though on a serious note it was a bit confusing sometimes due to the large amount of locations used within the 40 odd minutes. Still once again there are some ace sound effects used, and again the voice acting is of a high standard.
SCORE:
There are currently 3 other Dreadtime stories available to download, one about a werewolf, one about time travel (usually awesome!), and one about a psycho. I might be forced to get those also if they are as good as these! All five can be brought for the cheap price of 93 pence each at Audio Go, a cool site that appears to have a large selection of audio books for not bad prices!

Supernatural: Season 1 - Horror TV Show Review
A long while ago I reviewed the third season of Supernatural (here), I thought I may as well review the other ones as I have started watching them from the beginning again.
Two brothers; Sam and Dean Winchester became monster hunters along with their Dad after their mother was killed by a demon when they were very young. After their Dad goes missing while on a hunting trip Dean contacts Sam who had given up the life of the supernatural to try and lead a normal life. Together they set out to find their missing father as well as hopefully finally catch up with the being that destroyed their lives.
I always see Supernatural as a less kiddy, more serious Buffy the Vampire Slayer (that's not to say Buffy is bad, I love that show). The show kind of follows the same formula in that they have their 'monster of the week' episodes and the main plot line episodes. This season sees the brothers battling a load of evil spirits as well as the grim reaper, vampires, and even a minor God. The show explores many urban legends, here legends looked at include Bloody Mary, the man with the hook, and phantom vehicles. The effects are mostly quite good, and action comes fast combined with a witty script that stays more on realism than the constant joke cracking of Buffy.
The two lead actors Jared Padalecki as Sam, and Jensen Ackles as Dean are fantastic together, really coming across as siblings, Dean forever looking out for his younger brother. At times their conflict comes across as a bit forced, especially in the way past issues keep popping up to create mini conflicts that last just the episode they appear in. The acting in general is of a high quality with a host of great actors, and even some good child actors (quite a few children are dotted throughout the season). With the great car they drive the show has kind of a road trip feeling to it with a different area of America visited each episode.
The main story of the missing father is kind of a let down what with the Dad not really that lost, but by the end the main plot episodes get really exciting leading to a shocking cliffhanger that had me screaming for the 2nd season. A great start to a great show!

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) - Zombie Mode
I had only tried this mode once until recently when a friend of mine suggested we play it. Expecting to be good at it I was instead shocked to find out I was no good at it, my friend at first patient, reduced to screaming and shouting at me as I repeatedly got eaten by zombies, shot at thin air, and ran around screaming. Team work is integral to the Zombies mode, you must work together to keep your barricades built, and watch each others backs. Single player makes this harder but also provides you with the opportunity to get medicine which will revive you should you die.
The first of the three levels is titled 'Kino der toten' (translates to Theatre of the Dead) the silly intro has you time travelling back to the second World War to a theatre under siege from the undead. In multiplayer we could only last to around the fourth round (I was a bit rusty!), on my own I got to round six where hellhounds made short work of me. The second zombie level is set in the Pentagon, called 'Five'. Even sillier than Kino this has you playing as one of four real life historical figures (including JFK, and Fidel Castro).
The last of the zombie modes is set up like a retro style shooter. The action takes place with a birds eye view as you go from area to area fighting waves of zombies. Quite a similar feel to Smash TV, is fun but not as good or as tense as the FPS survivals.
These modes work at making you feel very vulnerable, limited weapons, limited health, and ever increasing odds create a feeling of panic. People were sceptical when the modes were first announced with World at War but have proved to be a fan favourite with a variety of DLC offering new levels (including one set on the moon I believe!)

Resident Evil 6: My thoughts on the Demo - Zombie Horror Videogame Preview (X-Box 360)
Well, I had been looking forward to this game despite not overlay positive previews. The demo was released earlier this week on the 360 so I gave it a gander. It is quite a large demo, giving you segments of a level from each of the three characters missions. The first demo I tried was Leon Kennedy's which is supposed to be old school Resident Evil in style...
I actually quite enjoyed the Leon demo. You are teamed up with some C.I.A woman on a campus that has been over run with zombies. The old fashioned, stumbling zombies! A nice return to form there. Some of the zombies carry basic weapons which a quick Q.T.E can see you snatch, to dispatch them with. Shooting zombies results in holes being punched through them, you can even shoot part of their heads off, nice! The demo sees you exploring the campus looking for a key card to open an exit. This felt more like Resident Evil 4 than anything earlier but it was entertaining enough.
Lastly was the demo for Weskers son. By far the worst of the three this one had you in Hong Kong (maybe) fighting enemies armed with machetes and guns. This time when enemies died they turned to stone, and a lot of them grew giant long tendrils which they could attack you from anywhere in the level with. Dead enemies spawned giant lizards whose speciality is knocking you over. A terrible segment was had here once again due to insanely incompetent A.I. I was unable to open a door, my A.I partner had to, but she was so busy running around trying to kill everything (and failing I might add) that in the end I was forced to back track through the level to kill anything I came across so that she would do what she needed to do.
The usual problems occur with some new ones also rearing their ugly heads. Firstly the game treats you as if you are playing online, so you are not allowed to pause the game, not even during cut scenes. The A.I while ok for the first two demo's was truly awful for the third one leaving me fears that the misery of dealing with a retarded A.I are back to haunt the series. The camera gets stuck on scenery sometimes, and especially if you are knocked over just seems to panic and starts flipping around. Falling over in itself is a huge chore as it takes an age to get back on your feet.
Resident Evil 6 could well prove to be a fun game, but judging by this demo it seems to be even more of an action game than even 5. I hated the Resident Evil 5 demo but the game turned out to be ok, though saying that I only felt the need to play through it once, and didn't even bother playing the D.L.C I purchased for it. Capcom just seem lost, Resident Evil has really gone off the rails. I hope the proper game is good, but 2/3's of this demo were just pretty terrible.

Spec Ops: The Line - Horror Videogame Review (X-Box 360, PS3, PC)
I had been waiting for this to go cheap enough, I loved the premise, and also really enjoyed the demo. Spec Ops: The Line is based on Joseph Conrad's famous book 'Heart of Darkness' and also partly based on 'Apocalypse Now' (also inspired by 'Heart of Darkness').
The worst sandstorm in recorded history hits the City of Dubai. An American Battalion; the 33rd, and led by war hero Colonel John Konrad go to the City to help with the evacuation. The 33rd go rogue after Konrad ignores orders to abandon his mission and leave the doomed place. The last message from him is that he is going to try to lead a caravan of 1000 survivors out of Dubai. 6 months later and a lone recorded message escapes from the sand storm surrounding the ruins, a looped message from Konrad. Three soldiers; Walker (the character you play as), Adams and Lugo are sent on a reconnaissance mission to see if the place does in fact still hold any survivors. Discovering Walker's idol Konrad is still alive he decides to change the mission into a rescue one. They are to head into the destroyed City and rescue John Konrad and any other survivors if in fact they even want rescuing...
I loved this game, it is very grim, and bleak but makes you think about just what it is your doing. The City of Dubai is in a state of war, the C.I.A have provided the civilian population with weapons to fight back against the tyrannical 33rd who kept order with extreme measures. Your arrival leads to both sides attacking you. Dubai is full of corpses, bodies hanging from lamp posts, scenes of executions, torture, and crimes against humanity, a messy past it hints at. As you progress through the game though the actions you commit to achieve you goals make you question just how different you are from the brutal acts you have witnessed.
At first you and your squad act like generic soldier meat heads, barking out generic orders as you engage enemy forces. By the games end you and your squad have vastly changed. All 3 of you shouting and swearing your heads off. Also adding to this is the physical damage the 3 of you take, hell even the loading screens change. Where before you got information such as what different types of weapons do by the games end the information that pops up on loading screens changes to gems such as 'Do you feel like a hero yet?'. The game succeeds at questioning you the player for your actions, like Walker you are blindly carrying on, butchering everyone you encounter in order to reach your mystical goal.
A few key events in particular shape you as you play, for me it wasn't the hokey 'shock factor' one (let down for me by average graphics) but a later one when you encounter an angry mob of unarmed civilians. By that point I just didn't think twice about gunning them down, the bleak nature of the game had gotten to me. The rescue mission turned completely on its head as I was now killing the people I had ventured into the doomed paradise to save. A few binary choices are given as you fight through the game but that was by far the most affecting.
How does it play though? In general it is a solid, yet unimaginative third person cover based shooter. Enemies are not too varied, you have the usual grunts, large heavily armoured troops, and the assortment of rocket launcher toting enemies, and snipers. The game is very linear, almost no multiple routes which other cover based shooters like Gears of War benefited from. There are some turret sections, a few optional stealth sections, and not too much else. Dubai comes across as a character though, sand can be used to drown enemies, but is also a hindrance, such as during one of the many sand storms that brings visibility down to a minimum. You are able to give very basic commands to your troops but I mostly ignored this. Locations are not too varied, many of the interior locations in particular are very samey large hotels and aquariums not feeling too different.
All in all this is a game that must be played for the story. The locations are full of incidental details, the hidden audio logs are very good, and the transition from good old American soldier to cold blooded maniac is a gradual, subtle shift, helped by liberal use of hallucinations and a grey moral compass. I would really recommend this game for an unsettling but thoughtful experience.

Dead Island: Riptide (2013) - Zombie Horror Videogame Trailer
I really enjoyed the original Dead Island, it provided a real feeling of surviving a zombie apocalypse and thankfully was still fun playing alone. The next game in the series is a direct continuation of the first game, sounds like it is set on a different island.
The trailer tries to evoke the feelings of the acclaimed trailer for Dead Island but I think fails. Still, not bad and least has zombies in it. Originally Riptide was planned as a stand alone expansion rather than a new game in its own right.

State of Decay (X-Box Live Arcade) and ZombieU (Wii U) - Zombie Horror Videogame Previews
So as the support band/game we first have State of Decay; an X-Box Live Arcade game. The trailer was recently released and the game seems to be a more sedate Left 4 Dead. It looks like it takes place in the American country. As a survivor it seems you must search locations for supplies? Ok, not very professional, I will look into this further...
I am back, and I was right, you do have to search locations for supplies! State of Decay is a third person open world zombie survival game that lets you use stealth as much as violence. You have a safe house that you must leave to get essentials each day. A variety of weapons and tools can be used to take out the running zombies including a variety of vehicles. Am interested in this, though it doesn't seem to have a gigantic budget if the trailer is anything to go by.
ZombieU is to be released for the new Nintendo console; the Wii U. This game is another one where you must search locations for supplies. Entirely set in London you can use CCTV to monitor the different levels to see which has the least zombies which you then explore on the directions of one of the 3 quest givers at your safe house. You use the Wii U's controller (that has a large screen built into it) as a backpack, and also to solve puzzles such as combination locks etc. What is cool is that nothing pauses why you do this, so it is possible for a zombie to sneak up on you on the TV screen while you are fiddling about on the little screen.
Zombies are quite deadly here and it doesn't take much to kill your character. When you die you respawn as a new survivor but to get your items back you must hunt and kill your previous character who is now a super zombie. The game is a first person one, and looks quite cool, featuring levels in such iconic places as Buckingham Palace and unique zombie types such as ones dressed as Beefeaters. Could maybe be the title that forces me to get a Wii U.
