Fir Cone Children is yet another name that prolific Berlin based musician Alexander Donat puts music out under, with him being the frontman for the band. The latest album is Jig of Glee with the dreampunk band once again creating songs based on Donat's daughters experiences of just being children. As you might expect, due to that the music has a more innocent and happy sound to it. It may be obvious but this doesn't link to horror at all, with the exception I guess of 'Witches Lab'.
It starts with a trilogy of energetic and upbeat songs that felt like Summer distilled into sound, the three tracks, 'You Are My Animal', 'Texting' and 'Diamond Dolphins' perfectly feed into each other and sound joyous. As the album progresses there is a more indie feel, with even some of Donat's more sneering sounding vocals coming into play on track 'Youth Lagoon'. The middle of this was where I had the most enjoyment, I felt that both 'Malin' and 'Battery' were excellent tracks, the former having a more of a regretful darker sound that again brought to mind Sea Power, while the later had a really good backing beat to it. It all culminates with 'Vote For Me', a song about a pretend election his daughters had, which had echoes of Clearlake to me with its gentle and peaceful sound.
The music of Fir Cone Children was well suited to this time of year. The peaceful, energetic and innocent sound to the album made for a pleasant album that was a chilled listen.
